Gentili Apri presents TrollAr, at Arco Madrid 2010, a solo exhibition by Belgian / Dutch artist duo JODI introducing trolling practices common to on-line communities but new to an Art Fair context.
A troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as discussion forums, chat rooms or blogs with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussions. JODI applies this behavior at ARCO Madrid, both off and on-line. A group of performers is directed by the artists to take on the role of trolls within the dynamics of the Fair, in its physical context, its pavilions, booths, talks and so on. On-line, the same performers are active from a table central to the booth from where they comment on YouTube, the on-line video platform acquired by Google in 2006, posting video answers made by a few seconds of thumbing to popular videos. More than 2,000 videos have been posted, with almost 500,000 visits so far.
The dadaist nature of these actions creates a flux of information not easilly understandable or analyzable by common criterias. They tend to stimulate responses which positivity is usually proportionally inverse to the financial interest inspiring presence in such contexts. The user has to deal with something unexpected and new behaviors are stimulated. The ongoing actions and reference information are announced and reported on a blackboard covering the entire back wall of the booth where also a serie of 4 magnificent photographic prints show a chronological collage of thumbs exported from the YouTube actions, developing photography towards 2.0 dadaist boundaries.
Other recent works from g33con.com complete the presentation referring to JODI’s personal anthropology, a homage to the wealth of folk and users-practices.
