Möglichkeitsraum II (The Blast of the Possible)

Gentili Apri presents video documentation of the project Möglichkeitsraum II (The Blast of the Possible) by Angela Melitopoulos, in an installation conceived for the occasion by the artist.

Möglichkeitsraum II engages in a live montage and dialogue on the potentiality of narratives in archives and the necessity of performing bodies in order to unfold them. The documentation shows the second of three screen performance of Möglichkeitsraum II, with Brian Holmes. It was premiered at the Berlin Documentary Forum 1 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, in Berlin on June 4. The cultural theorist Brian Holmes performs four audiovisual regimes that have emerged in the, USA since WW II: broadcast television in the Cold War consumer society; video as a subversion of the televisual norm; networked computing and its new forms of “control environments”; and new communication tactics of migration movements. The documentation of the live editing is shown in the gallery from an off screen point of view, preserving a trace of the performace on the narration of the archives.

Angela Melitopoulos, artist in the time-based arts, realizes video-essays, installations, documentaries and sound pieces. She experiments with the moving image in relation to the working of memory and conceptions of history. Her work focuses on duration and mnemonic micro-processes in documentation. Melitopoulos studied fine arts at the Art Academy Düsseldorf with Nam June Paik. She collaborates with political networks in Europe and Turkey and publishes articles on her artwork and mnemopolitics. She is currently teaching at the University of Art is Berlin. She publishes and collaborates with the sociologist and philosopher Maurizio Lazzarato. Her video work was awarded and shown in many international festivals, exhibitions and museums such as Antonin Tapies Foundation, Barcelona; Berlinale Filmfestival, Berlin, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin; Manifesta 7; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; 3rd Berlin Biennial, Berlin; Whitney Museum, New York, Berlinale Film Festival, Berlin among others.
